CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

I couldn’t believe this shit. Jonah thought he’d pawn me off on his best friend, Charles. Instead of telling the handsome man a few things about himself, for going along with his–not too bright–friend, I grabbed my jacket. Courtney was all smiles as I stepped outside for my first date, which should have been with Jonah!

Charles’s eyes slid up and down my body in an approving manner while he held the main apartment door open. Though I did my best to keep my own eyes straight, I noticed how the black button up and slacks complement his light brown skin as we meandered down the street.

During the night, I found that Charles was not as much as a player that I thought from our first introduction. He took me to my favorite spot for dinner, a home-style Italian restaurant. After Eggplant Parmesan, I joked with Charles about eating the garlic bread.

“I’m not a fan,” he replied.

“Hmmm, sure you don’t want any garlic bread? It’s the best action you will receive tonight,” I told him with a cocky grin. He needed to know there would be no kisses.

The smile in his pleasing lips implied he’s much too confident to think otherwise. A while later I ordered ice cream, Charles seemed content watching me eat. Tormenting him became my mission as I twirled up a bit of ice cream on my spoon and then slowly took it to my mouth. He cocked his head and watches as I eat.

Placing the spoon down I asked, “Is there something you should tell me?”

“Not sure,” he began, his green eyes staring deep at me, and the gold flecks began to twinkle. “Ask me anything, request of me anything you’d like?”

“Ask or request anything,” I arched an eyebrow, his demeanor tells me that it’s true. “Well, Charles, I only want one thing. Why isn’t Jonah sitting across from me?”

“My friend didn’t think you two were compatible.”

“Compatible?”

“Sure. I’m highly aware of what you think when seeing me,” Charles said.

I waved my hand for him to elaborate. His eyes again delighted in watching me eat ice cream.

“Okay, Gina. Upon first assessment, I met your fancy. The sexual attraction was evident–“

“Sexual? No, not sexual. But you are a pretty boy–I mean man, you’re good looking. You know it.”

“I do.”

My eyes twirled to the left and the conceited man smiled. “But what does your half-breed looks have to do with Jonah? How would he come to the notion that we aren’t compatible?”

“He gets his fair share of ladies, trust me, intelligence will get many like us exactly what we want,” Charles said, eyes landing on my lips. “He pulls them in faster than I do.”

“Jealous?” I joke, even though I could hardly believe it, though something prompted me to lessen the tension between us.

“No, not at all. Like I said, Jonah can bed any woman he wants. He decided that a nice girl like you should at least–”

“Sleep with someone that I’m physically attracted to?” I cut in.

“Those are not my words.
